私は子供の頃、イソップ童話やディズニー作品を数多く観ていたということもあり、動物に魅せられて以来何としてでも自身が動物に近付こう、動物のようになりたいと願うちょっと変わったところがありました。
今にして思えば、他の動物の人間にはない特徴である四つ足で歩いたり走ったりするところ、動きの躍動感や見た目の美しさに惹かれていたのでしょう。

動物なら犬でも猫でも鳴き声を真似しようとしたり、腰に紐を付けて自前の尻尾を作ったりと色々なことをしているうちに、動物を絵に描くことの楽しさに目覚めたのです。
創作活動は幼稚園のときから始まり、小学1年になると自由帳を1日に1冊使い切るほどに絵を描き続けていました。

私が好きになったのは特に大型の哺乳類、ライオンやゾウといった野生の動物達です。
動物園や水族館やサファリパークで彼らを前にしたとき目が輝いている、ギラついていると周りからよく言われます。
いつか、死ぬまでに1度でも良いからアフリカに行って野生の動物達に会いたいという夢も持ち続けています。

彼らを描いていくのに並行して、詳しい生態にも興味を持ち、図鑑や専門書やドキュメンタリー番組を目に焼き付けるのが僕の勉学であり楽しみでもあります。
それが高じて、中学のときの自由研究でダンゴムシを研究したことが地元の企画で最優秀の科学賞を受賞、大学のときには地元の公立動物園で学芸員の資格取得のため飼育員の実習を経験したこともあったほどです。

こうした活動は、私にとって一生かけてでも楽しみ続けていきたいと思えるものです。
恐らく私から動物と絵を取り上げたとしたら何も残らないのでは、と正直思っています。

最近私の絵を見て下った方々からの嬉しいコメントに、私の絵は一般の人が知らない動物を知るきっかけになると同時に、その動物を知っている立場の人には一目で何の動物かが分かるという声がありました。
私の動物作品の二面性というものを垣間見た瞬間です。

現在は作品制作をする傍ら、今までに独学で学んできた動物の生態に関する知識を幼稚園や学校、公共施設での講演会で老若男女あらゆる世代の人達に伝え、それをゆくゆくは動物の保護活動に繋げていきたいと考えながら活動を続けています。

As a child, I was fascinated by animals, largely due to watching countless Aesop’s Fables and Disney movies. Ever since then, I’ve had a bit of an unusual desire—to somehow get closer to animals, to become like them.

Looking back now, I think I was drawn to the qualities animals possess that humans do not—like walking and running on all fours, the dynamic nature of their movements, and their visual beauty.

Whether it was a dog or a cat, I would try to mimic their sounds, tie a string around my waist to make my own tail, and do all sorts of things. Eventually, this led me to discover the joy of drawing animals.

My creative journey began in kindergarten, and by the time I was in first grade, I was drawing so much that I would fill up an entire sketchbook in a single day.

The animals I came to love the most were large mammals—wild creatures like lions and elephants.

People often say that when I see them at zoos, aquariums, or safari parks, my eyes light up and sparkle with excitement.

One dream I’ve always held is to one day, even just once before I die, travel to Africa and meet these wild animals in their natural habitat.

As I continued drawing them, I also developed a deep interest in their biology and behavior. Immersing myself in encyclopedias, academic books, and nature documentaries became both my form of study and my greatest joy.

This passion even led me to win the top science award in a local contest for a project on pill bugs during junior high school. Later, while in university, I gained hands-on experience as an animal keeper at a local public zoo as part of earning a curator qualification.

These activities are things I want to continue enjoying for the rest of my life.

To be honest, if you took away animals and art from me, I feel like there would be nothing left.

Recently, people who have seen my artwork have given me encouraging feedback. Some say my drawings introduce lesser-known animals to the general public, while others, who already know these animals well, can instantly recognize which species they are.

It was a moment where I glimpsed the dual nature of my animal artwork.

Currently, while creating pieces, I also give lectures about animal ecology—something I’ve studied on my own over the years—at kindergartens, schools, and public facilities. I hope to one day connect these efforts to conservation activities for animals, and I continue to work toward that goal.
